To my lover..........

I was checking through my phone early this morning when suddenly I read a post about my lover’s nigeria flagbirthday today and then I had to douse off the fatigue from the day’s work to express my love for someone that has nurtured and accommodated me throughout my life up to this moment despite my flaws.

Seems like yesterday when you narrated some of your ordeals to me in the hands of your old master. You told me of how you were being enslaved by your master; you told me of their exploitation and imposed rule. You told me of how some of your brave offsprings were able to recapture you from the hardship which gave you the freedom, you’ve always longed for. You said it was a joyous day for all back in 1960; I wept while watching you narrate this to me. Questions such as “How would my dear lover have to go through this?” runs through my mind and right then I realized that it must have been a long walk to freedom. You said you were all for the freedom and even eyed the wicked old master when you were about collecting the mantle of leadership. Little did you know that some of your offsprings would do worse than your old master.

You then went on to tell me of how your beautiful offsprings elected amongst themselves leaders which results to war because others would not have the elected lead. You said there was such a tussle for power and each keep eating you out by selling out some of priceless possessions. You told me how some of your offsprings were murdered for your sake. You cried but they see not because they were all engrossed in their selfish interests. Each fighting to the good part of your possessions with fear that you will soon die and would be of no benefit to anyone. You said the more they discover your possessions, the more they sell it off without using it for everyone’s benefit. Your offsprings no longer see you as attractive as your counterparts. They will rather clinch to your counterparts than be associated with you; they made others view you as a commoner with no future despite your beauty that radiates throughout those years.

The younger ones keep struggling to be freed of you, they want to romanticize your counterparts who will give them daily bread and water for their sweat during the day. They wouldn’t mind to pick the crumbs from their tables as much as they would be getting stipend to flaunt in the face of those who are still with you. So quick to get rid of you, they put off your learnings to mimic the ways of your counterparts, and even deny knowing you even though they look just like you. You said the good ones among your offspring keep urging the younger ones to stay but their ears are so full of promises from your counterparts and they just won’t agree because their eyes are blind to see you but open to the evil works of older offsprings.

You said the evil works of the older springs are gradually catching up on the younger ones and that your major fear is that the unborn are already aware and mastering their corrupt ways. You told me of the fight and hatred shown towards each other; You said the lucky ones among them stare at the unlucky ones with disdain and brag about the wealth accumulated from selling off your priceless possessions to the unlucky ones as if you didn't father those ones too.  They use each other and contentment you said is never in their dictionary. The unbeautyful ones about to make the beautyful ones, ugly.

You told me of your sorrows and fear of which I cannot fully express here. You wonder if the “Change”, one of your older offsprings promised would be fully implemented. You were happy about the little progress you’ve seen so far but feared if these won’t be another camouflage. Nevertheless, despite the selfish ones among us, despite other fleeing from you, I cannot but express my love for you. You gave me food, shelter, education even though I am yet to get the good job, your older offspring promised me. You said I should be patient that a change is here. I believe you. I promise to dress you well in return to make you stand with shoulders high among your counterparts. The change is here and we are ready to make you better.

Blow the trumpet, hit the drum and shout to the world that we are celebrating our own Country tomorrow. Happy Independence Day, Nigeria. We love you.
