Are Leaders Born or Made?

Image
The above is a major debate that has taken over several platforms with no final conclusion as to whether leaders are born or made. Many have argued that leadership qualities have been imbued in some humans right from birth and only manifest as they grow while others have argued that leadership qualities come out from attending several leadership programs and trainings. A child who exhibits leadership traits from childhood would gladly be on the side of those who have argued that leaders are born while the timid child who went through several leadership trainings would promptly object to this. We spoke to five young business leaders to hear their view on this and here is what they have to say: “I strongly believe that leaders are made based on the following: the concept of leadership is such that demands evidence of track records and as such, qualities that typifies one must be evident. To say that leaders are born is to outrightly draw a line of segregation and declare...

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Image
According to an online dictionary, “Community service is a voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area. It can also be defined as an unpaid work, intended to be of social use.” Wikipedia says that, “Community service is performed by someone or a group of people for the benefit of the public or its institutions.” The question that may likely occur in your mind would probably be, “and why should I read this? Does it really concern me as an individual?” of course it does. Many of us probably forgot or last hear the word during the one year compulsory national Youth service Corp where every corp member belongs to a community service group and are urged to carry out group community service or an individual project. As an individual, or a corporate entity, we should imbibe the culture of giving back to the society. Remember, these are the people who directly or indirectly contribute one way or the other to the success of your business. How? They might not...

A must read for every Job seeker: Proper Job Interview Etiquettes

Image
Job Interview Etiquettes Most job seekers do not pay attention to proper interview etiquettes, they get overly excited when called upon and immediately ironed their shirts and trousers/skirts just to look good for the interview. Now that is good, but a lot needs to be involved in sending across the proper message which gives you the right image. Proper interview etiquettes is listed and explained below: ·                Arrive early Arrive early for interview, ask for proper directions before the d-day or do a trial run of the route before the interview to familiarise yourself with the route. Leave home early to avoid traffic, constructions delays and that means you have to plan ahead. No one wants to hire a late comer.   Switch off your mobile phones I would have suggested that you put your mobile phone on vibration but that may distract you during the course of the interview. It is safe to switch it off before e...

Unemployment and its headache: A Way Out............

Image
“A man willing to work, and unable to find work, is perhaps the saddest sight that fortune’s inequality exhibits under this sun”- Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), British historian and essayist. Let me start with my own experience as a new graduate looking for a good job at least to fend for myself, take care of my family and live well. I knew deep down that I wasn’t going to stay at home for long, well, that’s my faith at work. I started submitting my CV, polishing it each time I apply for a new job. Unfortunately, the positive spirit started dwindling because I wasn’t receiving any reply from those organisations I submitted to. Then a friend advised me to dress up each morning and visit the HR department of at least five organisations in order to submit my CV. What?! What if I’m turned back at the gate? I didn’t buy the idea but on a second thought I felt I should at least to get my hands busy. Before the “Leg stretch” of Job hunting started, I received a mail from a co...

Image
Pebbles of mercy tiny, let me see thee From banks of Life, overflowing, Rapids, running free Father, Abba Father! Help I come to You Open the eyes of my heart, show me gates from doom Lift me up from rue show me the truth that my Day be due. Pebbles of mercy petite, thy face let me see, From shadows of death, that my mouth be filled with glee.

Necessary documents to take to the Orientation camp (FOR THE OTONDOS)

Image
Still on NYSC, you won’t blame me but we need to inform our new otondos about certain things before they start building up wrong impressions about NYSC. Now that you have your call up letter, you’re good to go. My good to go does not include just taking your clothes and call-up letter and boarding a bus to the orientation camp. Farabale please!   There are basic things you need to take along to the orientation camp and they are: Your final year student ID Card, The Notification of result from your higher institution (original and photocopies). If you don’t have, go back to your school and sleep there. Hold on to them like Jacob did to Angel Gabriel and say, “I will not let you people go until you give me my Notification of result.”  And May God help you with that struggle. Next is your passport photographs; don’t go and do oversabi by borrowing your sister or brother’s khaki to snap. Remember you’re still an otondo, just snap in your nice outfit (red background). Now ...

When the bush meat chase the hunter- Should a woman woo a man?

Image
Most people have argued that there’s really nothing bad in a woman wooing a man and revealing her feelings. They came up with all sorts of arguments which basically dwell on saving her from late marriage and being trendy. Some ladies also see nothing wrong in this; according to one, “If I like a guy, I go for him. Life is basically too short for hiding feelings.” I used to think it’s all jokes until I saw a picture of a woman who proposed to her man. Na she kuku get her money to propose. But wait! Does it look right? I’ll rather let my man propose to me and make my proposal fantasy come to pass. That part of me proposing to him was never part of the fantasy. Well, that’s for me. Away from my own belief, I spoke to about ten guys concerning this: I mean ten matured, responsible men not some under-aged or flirt who parade and view themselves as matured, and here is what they have to say about this: “It’s really not a bad thing in the western world, but in Africa, our women t...

A GIRL CHILD (Poem) .........

Our sister is dark and comely the Sun has tanned her skin, Lovely, endearing and unobtrusive, In Sub-Saharan heat she bask Her blooming strength, The sonorous voice, Her strong-willed unveils with much enthusiasm, Stay back and go to that place! It doesn’t befit your kind. Keep and bury it within, Remember "You're just a woman!" How many dream's been shut, As out they thirst to move From yonder unto eyes, the real; The doors blocked, sadly to be visible How many brains has been tamed By arms of culture to chill She stretched, rearing the skies to soar Out of Blues, sudden, her wings clipped! Her wails unseen, still unheard So sadly shrouded beneath her smiles Faithful wife, aunt, sure mother-to-be, Unfilled desires in every woman. Egbeyale Dapo @Yale_Fisayo

How to manage your finances in NYSC Camp - For our New Otondos

Image
To the new Otondos, the one overly excited of leaving home and serving their fatherland, and to those ones who are moody already because of their postings, this is for you. If you’re unhappy with your postings and already wishing and dreaming of the day Baba Buhari would scrap the scheme, you go just wait for long. Better calmly and jejeli accept your fate and move on. Besides the service doesn’t really take that long, before you close and open your eyes, you’re already done with it. Just open your heart and make good use of it. I mean good use; that does not include messing up your life for fun. Do I hear someone say what’s my own? Well, Na una sabi. NYSC is a compulsory one year service set up by the Nigerian government to involve Nigerian graduates in the development of the country. Most big companies request for the certificate before you can be part of their team, Therefore its better you get through with it once and for all. Find something productive to do within your s...

EVERY CHOICE ( A Poem) by Egbeyale Fisayo

Every choice is a way, consecutive space to a place. One step leads to other, leading straight to some stage Every chance is a junction, black asphalt, two sides a coin; Either taken or left, still the reward lingers Not all that follows a valley is a mountain, Earth may decide to play a trick Not all that falls from welkin is rain Heaven also decides which the ground needs Every step is a door, clearly bringing the Walker to a room Every rock in the river, readily has a tale for the view Every act is a choice, sequentially quiet space to a phase. twitter handle: @yale_fisayo

Having family pressure on Marriage?

Image
We had just finished a drama ministration in church of a lady in her mid-thirties who was pressurized into visiting a traditionalist just so she could get a husband.  The man she ended up with after constant beatings wanted a separation from her. She was sad and confused and realised that she missed it in marriage by not seeking God’s purpose for her life While we were at the dressing room to change from our costume to our Sunday outfits, a lady walked in who commended us for our ministration and blamed the lady in the drama for succumbing to the temptation. She narrated a story of how her mother constantly pressurized her to get married even when she doesn’t have anyone at the moment. According to her, she was almost forced to marry someone she knew quite well is a smoker due to constant pressure she gets from her family. Another lady whom we met at the room must have been touched with this because she also decided to share her own experience. According to her, her grandmothe...

First thing to know when responding to a job advert….

Image
It’s quite surprising to see young graduates overly conscious of money rather than the knowledge to be gained and the advantage such would add to their Curriculum vitae.  We talked to few young graduates on the first thing that comes to their mind before responding to a job advert and here is what they have to say: According to Femi Adeoye, a graduate of University of Lagos, “The salary is the most important thing, the salary determines if I will apply for the job or not. I’m not particularly concerned about the duties; we can always work it out.” Another graduate, Oluwatosin Bojomimo, said “I will first of all do my background check to know if there is job security. I don’t want to apply for a job and be told my service is no longer needed after three months. That’s the first thing I try to find out before I respond to any job advert.” A graduate of University of Benin, Oyindamola Akindele said “The salary comes to mind first, I don’t want to settle for a job where ...
