I was mute. I stared at Tola for so long unsure of what to say. So many thoughts throwing caution in my mind and when I finally uttered the words, it was:

“I am engaged.” I said.

Tola’s face lits up, she moved forward and gave me a big hug.

“Really? How come you didn’t tell me when I asked of your man in the first place?”

“I wanted it to be a surprise.” I stuttered.

“Yeah right. It is a surprise. I am so happy for you Lilian. The man is lucky. So tell me,  how did you meet?”

She went on with her questions and I provided her with my imaginative answers. I lied! I just couldn’t bring myself to divulge the kind of information I have with her.

I didn’t want to hurt her, I wanted my friend to be happy even though we hardly keep up with each other.

“and let me tell you something too.” She said

“What?” I asked.

“I am pregnant” she announced.

Pregnant? Oh No! God!

“Wow! What a good news! I am so happy for you dear” I said faking the smile.

“I haven’t told Peter because I wanted to make it a surprise. I will be announcing the good news to him this night.”

“That’s good. This calls for celebration” I said.

“Yes dear”

By then, I had swallowed whatever information I intended to reveal. We chatted and bid ourselves goodbye with a promise to pay her a visit.

IN COURT
“What happened on the 24th of May?” the man repeated the question.

“On the 24th of May, I was in my house.” He finally said.

“What happened to Janet?” Lawyer Abiokun asked.

“I don’t know. We are still looking for her and the family has assumed that she’s dead since we couldn’t find her.”

Laywer Abiokun Adeigba laughter filled the courtroom.

“Did you not push her and she hit her head on the couch?”

He was taken by surprise “I didn’t…….”

Lawyer Abiokun laughed out loud again.

"Janet?” Lawyer Abiokun called.

A tall fair skinned lady walked in, smiling.

The man was shocked.

“I am not dead” The lady said smiling.

Lawyer Abiokun Adeigba laughter filled the courtroom again.

TOLA’S PART

I broke the good news to my Peter and he was of course the happiest man on earth.

“I don’t want you to overstress yourself. Please don’t overstress yourself for me.” Peter said.

“I won’t” I smiled.

“I love you so much baby. I don’t know how my life would have been if I didn’t get married to you. You are the best of them all” he said.

“Best of whom?” I asked.

“Best of your specie” he said.

I smiled. I love this man who sat across to me. I loved Peter so much and will do anything to make our union work. That night was magical as we made love filling our ears with promises. Peter, my blessing from God!

LILIAN PART!

“Vivian you have no shame” I said.

“Shame? What’s my own with shame abeg?” Vivian asked.

“Shame is when you are sleeping with another woman’s husband”.

“and does the shame leaves when the man is sleeping with a single lady? Cut it off Vivian, Cut it off! I didn’t tie him down with a rope neither did I force him on me. He liked what he saw and he decided to go for it.”

“You are a virtuous woman, or so I believed. Why have you decided to stoop so low and reduce yourself to a man’s sex toy?”

“I don’t mind being his sex toy. I have always loved him. I dream about him everyday and can’t get him out of my thoughts. I have always prayed that he would be mine and thank to heavens he found me beautiful too.” She smiled.

“He found you beautiful after he got married? Has he been seeing the ugliness before then?”

She was visibly annoyed.

“Please spare me those questions. I am all for him for now. He knows how to better satisfy me in bed. (mesmerised) I mean he’s too good. (regains herself) Besides, I don’t have any man for now and he’s the only one who cares to listen to me. Do you want me all alone?”

“Must you have a man to be loved?” I asked.

“Yes. I am keeping him till I find someone that can match up with him.”

“And that is……” She cut me off and left, swaying her buttocks as if to remind me of the bodily asset she possessed.

I made up my mind then to act on what I had planned.

TOLA’S PART

“It is about your husband. I have more details to reveal on him” was the text message I received as I woke up. The knock on the door jolted me from my thoughts.

I went downstairs and low behold, it was Mrs. Tope shining her beautiful smile.

“Mrs. Tope, please come in”

“No I won’t be coming in please. I have somewhere I need to rush to.” She hesitated.

“Hope no problem?” I asked

“None at all ma. Please is Peter at home?” she asked.

“He has left for work.” I answered

“Oh! I will check him at work then. There is a project that needs his urgent attention and I have been trying to reach him but all to no avail.”

“Must be the network because his phone was fully charged before he left for work this morning.” I said.

“Let me quickly be on my way then” she said and hurried to her car.

I pondered on the text message. I didn’t know either to reply the text or just ignore.

It took me about 30minutes before finally replying the text.

In less than two minutes, a text message which reads “Then meet me at the Obino Junction at 8pm.”

I laughed at the text reply. To meet a total stranger at that time for information about my husband? Was I alright? How could I have even replied the text message of an unknown number in the first place. I deleted the text messages and went about my daily chores.

LILIAN’S PART

I had mapped out a plan that I was convinced about. I waited and waited for a feedback and there was none. I was disappointed but vowed not to give up. I confided in an elderly woman who looked at me with much disbelief, so I sought to resolve it myself.

I picked up the call and dialled the number for the revelation. It was acted out, yet hoping that my voice doesn’t give away my identity.
